The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup was first contested between the USA and Great Britain & Ireland in 1927 and since that time has grown to become the biggest professional golf tournament in the world.

Played every two years, the Ryder Cup encapsulates all of the very best elements of golf and sporting challenge. Head to head battles within a team environment lead to drama, tension, patriotism and camaraderie which lead the players, in conjunction with the crowd, to create an event that captures the attention of the entire world.

The first twenty-two Ryder Cup matches saw Team USA dominate their British and Irish counterparts as they won 18 and lost only three matches with the 1969 tournament famously ending in a tie.  This dominance by the Americans led to the introduction of players from throughout Europe and in 1979 Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido were selected for the new European Ryder Cup Team.

Since the introduction of Team Europe in 1979 there have been 16 Ryder Cup Matches. Europe has won 8, the USA has won 7 and one match has ended in a tie.

The Ryder Cup was last played at Celtic Manor in the wind and rainy days of early October 2010. It was this Ryder Cup that particularly reignited the contest and emphasised why the Ryder Cup is such a wonderful tournament.  Europe completely dominated the first two days' golf and looked to be in complete control, but as so often happens in the Ryder Cup, the Americans fought their way back to set-up a breath taking climax.

Fortunately for Europe, Graeme McDowell holed a wonderful putt on the 17th Green to clinch victory and send the Ryder Cup European Team and supporters into a frenzy of excitement.

The 2012 Ryder Cup will take place at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago in late September 2012.  Team Europe has selected José Maria Olazábal as their captain whilst the American’s have gone for the experience of David Love III.

Jose Maria Olazabal has played in the European Ryder Cup Team seven times since 1987 and was a part of the first European Team to win on American soil.  Olazabal was also part of the most successful Ryder Cup partnership ever when he played alongside Seve Ballesteros. Together they played in 15 matches, from which they won 11 and halved 2

Davis Love has represented the USA in six Ryder Cup tournaments; however he has only enjoyed victory on two occasions. His first win came at the 1993 Ryder Cup on European soil as the Americans defeated Europe 15-13 at the Belfry. His second victory was at the 1999 Ryder Cup at Brookline where the American completed the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history to win the event by 14½ points to 13½
